A Huntington Beach man was arrested Sunday night at Central Park after a social media film crew caught him showing up to meet what he thought was a juvenile male.
Jerry Robert Mejias, 61, was booked at the Huntington Beach city jail on one count of arranging a meeting with a minor to engage in lewd conduct (PC 288.4b).
According to HBPD, the crew had been posing as a juvenile male online. Mejias arrived at the park around 7:30 p.m. Officers responded, spoke with everyone present, and made the arrest based on statements and corroborating evidence from the investigation.
The department acknowledged the outcome but pushed back on the method. HBPD said it cannot stress enough the dangers of conducting To Catch a Predator style investigations and meeting in person — a reminder that civilian predator stings carry real risks, even when the person on the other end deserved catching.
No additional details will be released, per HBPD.
