A Fountain Valley man was arrested this weekend on felony animal abuse charges after a witness called police to report him kicking and stomping a German Shepherd near the city Recreation Center.

Fountain Valley Police Department officers responded after a concerned citizen reported the abuse in progress. The dog appeared to be in distress. Officers located and detained the man on scene and arrested him for felony animal abuse.

Orange County Animal Control responded and transported the dog for veterinary evaluation and treatment. Its current condition has not been publicly disclosed.

FVPD credited the outcome to the witness who made the call. "This is see something, say something in action," the department said. "We commend the citizen who called to report this incident and for being the voice for the voiceless."

Under California law, felony animal abuse applies when a person maliciously and intentionally maims, mutilates, tortures, wounds, or kills a living animal. Conviction carries up to three years in state prison.

The suspect name has not been released. No further details about the incident have been made public.
