An elderly woman suffered serious injuries Friday afternoon after being struck by a juvenile riding a Surron electric bicycle near the intersection of Main Street and Ocean Avenue in Seal Beach, according to the Seal Beach Police Department.

The pedestrian was crossing the street when the collision occurred. The juvenile rider was not injured. The woman was transported to a local hospital with major injuries. Her condition has not been publicly disclosed.

The department deployed its Serious Traffic Accident Response (STAR) Team to conduct the investigation. STAR teams are called when collisions result in serious injury or death.

Surron electric bicycles have become a common sight in Southern California but sit in a murky spot under California law. Depending on how they are configured and modified, they can be classified as electric bicycles, mopeds, or motorcycles — each with different licensing, registration, and age requirements. Standard electric bicycle rules do not require a license or registration, but many Surrons exceed the power and speed thresholds that trigger those requirements.

The intersection of Main Street and Ocean Avenue sits at the center of Seal Beach's beach district, steps from the pier. The area draws significant foot traffic from residents and visitors, particularly on weekday afternoons and weekends.
