A 13-year-old boy died Thursday night after crashing an electric motorcycle into a center median on Magnolia Street in Garden Grove, according to the Garden Grove Police Department.

The collision happened at approximately 9:50 p.m. near the intersection of Magnolia Street and Larson Avenue. Police did not receive the call through the usual channels. The initial alert came from Life360, a family location tracking app, which flagged a possible collision in the area. Officers arrived to find the juvenile being loaded into an ambulance.

The boy, a Santa Ana resident whose name has not been released, was unconscious and transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. He was later pronounced dead.

According to GGPD, the juvenile was riding a black E Ride Pro electric motorcycle in the number one lane of Magnolia Street, traveling at approximately 35 mph. For reasons that remain under investigation, he struck the center median, lost control, and was ejected from the motorcycle.

The E Ride Pro is an off-road-style electric motorcycle marketed toward younger riders. The model is not street-legal in California.

The GGPD Neighborhood Traffic Unit has assumed the investigation. It is the third time in recent months that an electric two-wheeled vehicle has figured in a serious North OC collision. In March, an elderly woman suffered major injuries after being hit by a juvenile on a Surron e-bike near the Seal Beach Pier. In April, a 70-year-old bicyclist was killed on Pacific Coast Highway in Huntington Beach.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or has video footage from the area is asked to contact GGPD Investigator Lang at 714-741-5823 or mlang@ggcity.org.
