A 70-year-old Huntington Beach man died Monday after his bicycle was struck by a car on Pacific Coast Highway, just north of Newland Street.
The collision happened around 11:50 a.m. Officers arrived to find the bicyclist unconscious in the roadway. Huntington Beach Fire Department paramedics responded but could not save him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The other driver, a 20-year-old Huntington Beach man, was uninjured. He cooperated with investigators, and police say impairment does not appear to be a factor on his end. Whether the bicyclist was impaired has not been determined.
Based on the preliminary investigation, the bicyclist was heading southbound on PCH when he began merging into traffic to turn east onto Newland Street. The Subaru was also traveling southbound when the two collided.
The investigation is being handled by the HBPD Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team. Anyone who witnessed the crash or the events leading up to it should contact Traffic Investigator Steve Flynn at (714) 536-5666.
