A large tank at an industrial facility in Garden Grove released thousands of gallons of toxic chemicals into the air early Friday morning, forcing evacuations in the surrounding area.
The incident was reported at approximately 1:09 a.m. at the GKN Aerospace facility on Western Avenue. A 34,000-gallon tank released methyl methacrylate, a liquid chemical used in manufacturing acrylic plastics, according to aerial footage from the scene.
Orange County Fire Authority responded with a hazmat operation. Residents in the immediate area were evacuated. A reunification center was established at Rancho Alamitos High School on Dale Street for displaced residents.
Methyl methacrylate is a flammable, volatile compound with a strong odor. Exposure can cause respiratory irritation, headaches, and nausea. At industrial concentrations, it poses fire and health risks to anyone in the vicinity.
GKN Aerospace manufactures aerospace components and structures. The Western Avenue facility is part of the company's Southern California operations.
No injuries were immediately reported. The situation was still developing as of early Friday morning. North OC Pulse will update this story as more information becomes available.
